Introduction to Mineral Fillers and Extenders for Coatings

Abstract:

Mineral fillers and extenders are an important, but often overlooked component necessary for the formulation of durable and marketable coating products. They are also virtually all 100% solids making them well suited for advancing high solids and waterborne systems. This talk reviews the key mineral types and the key properties of mineral fillers such as; particle shape, particle size, hardness, refractive index and oil absorption, and the impact they have on coating performance. Participants will gain valuable insight on how to select the right filler or combinations for coating application needs like; TiO2 spacing, UV resistance, de-glossing, reinforcement, abrasion and chemical resistance.
