Title: Statistical Design of Experiments

Course Purpose:

To provide chemists in the coatings industry with the knowledge and skills to apply statistical design of experiments in formulation and product development.  Save time and money with more efficient experimentation.

Course Description:

This hands-on two-day course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of statistical design of experiments (DOE) through application to real-world examples. Types of designs and appropriate choice of design for specific problems, setting up and executing designed experiments in a cost and time-effective manner, and data analysis through graphical and statistical test methodologies are introduced through lectures and activities.  Statistical software methodologies are demonstrated for the design and analysis of contemporary product development problems.   

The course is designed to provide practical knowledge of the value and appropriate use of statistical design of experiments (DoE) and the ability to implement DoE in the workplace. Instructors have over 20 years of experience in use of DoE in the polymer industry.  This two day course will include lectures, hands-on activities, practical examples, development of experimental designs using Minitab software, and data analysis.  Students will receive pre-loaded data drives with notes and worked examples.  At the end of the course, students will be able to design full factorial, fractional factorial experiments, mixture designs, recognize when to use different types of designs, analyze results in Minitab, and make recommendations for next steps.  These skills are useful for development of new products, redesign of products, problem solving, and issue resolution.   The final afternoon session will provide individualized help and instruction on design projects and alternate types of designs.

Course Requirements:

Each student must bring a laptop computer to class with Minitab 18 pre-loaded (30 day free trial or the full version of Minitab 18).

Sarah E. Morgan

Professor of Polymer Science

Dr. Sarah Morgan is a Professor in the School of Polymers and Engineering at The University of Southern Mississippi. She joined The University in 2002 after a fourteen year career in industrial R&D. Her expertise is in the area of polymer surfaces and interfaces. She was awarded the Journal of Polymer Science Part B: Polymer Physics Prize for 2010 and The Society of Plastics Engineers Education Award in 2015. Morgan’s research focuses on surface and interface modification, involving high performance polymers, composites, nanocompsites, and bioinspired materials. Her research is funded by public and private agencies including NSF, Dept. of Education, Dept. of Energy and industrial partners.

Before joining the university she worked at GE Plastics in R&D and research management in engineering thermoplastics. She developed new copolymers, polymer blends, composites and nanocomposites for automotive, electronics, medical products and building and construction applications and holds multiple publications and patents. In addition to polymer synthetic capabilities, her laboratory includes rheometry, atomic force microscopy, nanoindentation, tribology, ellipsometry, and solar cell fabrication, simulation and device testing.

Les Goff

Dr. Les Goff is founder and President of Goff Consulting, that was established in 2004. He was formerly the President of Noetic Technologies, Inc. an early stage technology and commercialization company. He worked 16 years with GE in various roles, Product Development, Global Technology Manager, Global Marketing Manager and Business Leader. He is a portfolio entrepreneur and has been involved in over 10 start-ups companies as an investor, CEO, COO, CTO and founder with several successful exits. Goff is one of the first members of the Mississippi Angel Network and is a certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt. He developed the model and processes for Noetic Technologies, Inc. that received the 2010 Rucker Award for Innovation between a Public and Private entity. He has taught Six Sigma courses for the past 10 years and help develop data based decision leadership and processes in various businesses and industries. 

Les Goff is a Ph.D. in Polymer Science from the University of Southern Mississippi and holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from Mississippi State University. He has also served as Chairman of the Industry Sector of Chemicals, Energy, Environment and Materials for the Licensing Executives Society (USA & Canada), a non-profit organization addressing the strategic role of intellectual property in business, including IP transactions.
