Application Methods for Waterborne Coatings

This lecture will describe many of the application methods used to apply coatings, with an emphasis on issues unique to waterborne coatings, such as formulating for the correct rheology and ways to prevent coating defects.  Methods covered include brush, roll, spray (conventional, airless, electrostatic, etc), various types of deposition coatings, roll coating and others.  The techniques will span both architectural and industrial applications, and include common methods for applying coatings in both field and factory settings.  Benefits and disadvantages of each method will be discussed.

Dr. Leo Procopio received his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania and joined Rohm and Haas Company in 1991 as a Senior Scientist in their Industrial Coatings group.   He has spent the last 22 years at Rohm and Haas, now the Dow Advanced Materials division of The Dow Chemical Company, carrying out exploratory research, new product development and technical service work in the area of waterborne coatings for the industrial maintenance and industrial metal and wood finishing markets.  He is currently a Technical Service Group Leader in the Dow Coating Materials business, where his responsibilities include designing new resins for waterborne and solventborne industrial finishes, and assisting coatings manufacturers in their formulation development.  He is a member of the American Chemical Society, ACA, NACE and SSPC, and currently chairs the SSPC committee C.1.4.c on Waterborne Acrylic Coatings.
