Abstract

In this paper, we present cure kinetics of fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) powder coatings, from industrial and applied product perspectives, and based upon the nth order and the autocatalytic reaction kinetic pathway using thermal analysis data of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).  The nth order model kinetic parameters, including the frequency factor A, activation energy Ea and the reaction rate order n  are estimated through (a) the Kissinger plot plus isothermal methods and (b) the Borchardt-Daniels approach on experimental DSC data.  Meanwhile, the SB (m, n) autocatalytic model is primarily focused on elucidating complete cure behaviors in that (c) all kinetic variables including the dual reaction orders m and n are determined by model fitting DSC curves and numerical methods combined.  Application of the appropriate cure rate equations to practical processing and formulation platforms of FBEs is discussed in details, producing meaningful findings in addition to quantitative characteristics.

 

Biography

 

Wei Li is an R&D Scientist from the Valspar Corporation, currently with the Sherwin-Williams Company, focused on development and support of functional coatings for the General Industrial Protective Powder Technology team.  Wei's prior experience was with the Bergquist Company as a Senior R&D Engineer formulating thermally conductive polymer coatings, and with Imation Corporation developing a variety of coatings and microcapsules.  Wei received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota and Masters in Chemical Engineering in Beijing, China.
