The market for bio based alternatives has been a focus of the coatings market for more than three decades now.  The chemistry to change plant based materials to petrochemical alternatives has basically yielded more expensive raw materials that mirror the current solvent market. Although these solvents are bio based they still are VOC contributors. For the past twenty years New Century Coatings has looked at AgriEsters that are used in pharmaceuticals, cleaning products, cosmetics and bio diesel fuels as potential solvent replacements in coatings.  By using the solvency of AgriEsters one can dissolve traditional resins like alkyds, solid bead acrylics, high melt hydrocarbons,  polyterpenes and epoxies.  These cuts can then be emulsified and used as stain vehicles, plasticizers, glycol replacements, biocides, mold and mildew additives.  The value in creating AgriEster emulsions is making available new tools for the formulators.  We can explore new resin combinations, utilize old acrylic emulsions technology and formulate essentially zero VOC stains and paints for DIY market.
