BIO
Sam Morell is a Chemical Engineering graduate of New York University and founder of S.P. Morell and Company.  His work experience includes both technical and marketing positions at Ciba Specialties, Rohm and Haas, BASF, and Air Products and Chemicals.

Mr. Morell is a recognized authority on surfactants and has been instrumental in promulgating the use of specialty surfactants to a wide array of industries including coatings, inks, adhesives, and lubricants.  He has authored numerous technical articles on the subject in various publications including Modern Paint and Coatings, The American Ink Maker, and Adhesives Age.

Mr. Morell has also participated as a lecturer in the Distinguished Lecture Series sponsored by the U.S. Federation of Society for Coatings Technology.

ABSTRACT
This presentation will give an update on traditional and new rheological additives used in the coatings industry.  Emphasis will be placed on a novel line of products built on hybridized amide chemistry which were recently developed for waterborne coating systems. These products form a needle-like structure and impart excellent thixotropic effects without an increase in viscosity.  Advantages in waterborne coating systems include ease of post addition, high shear thinning, sag control, heat age stability, and the prevention of pigment settling and hard caking.
