Abstract

Ease of use of a paint is of great importance to the consumer.  Pigment dispersion stability on the shelf and in aqueous coatings remains a priority for the paint and pigment dispersion manufacturers.  Viscosity and syneresis indicate the quality of a pigment dispersion, while examining color development when it is mixed into a paint reveals the dispersion’s ability to stabilize the pigment particles and its compatibility with the paint.  Some of the dispersants that are widely used offer good grinding and dispersion qualities, but result in increased viscosity over time.  Dispersions stabilized with alternate chemistries perform as well as the standard dispersants, but provide lower viscosities in stability studies. Improved color development is an added benefit with the alternative chemistries when introduced to commercial paints.  Results of incorporating the alternate chemistries into dispersions of common pigments will be compared to those made with standard dispersants found in the industry.  The dispersions were also mixed into acrylic and styrene-acrylic interior, waterborne paints.  Application testing such as rub up, viscosity, gloss, and color strength, and subsequent evaluations will also be discussed.
