ABSTRACT

Surfactants are used in emulsion polymerization recipe at a very low level, but it plays an important role in the emulsion polymerization (EP) processes. Surfactant contributes to determine the latex particle formation, size, stability and compatibility with recipe ingredients and ingredients used in the coating, paints and pressure sensitive adhesives formulation. Anionic, cationic and a combination of ionic and nonionic surfactants have been used in the EP reaction.
This paper will present novel eco-friendly surfactants and their use as compared to industrial bench-mark surfactants in the EP process. These surfactants opposite to industrial bench-marks performed far better in the formation of nanospheres, and the polymerization vessel was very clean. The particle sizes produced from these surfactants were between 70 nm to 120 nm at high solids.  Latex coat ability on polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), metals and glass was excellent. Film was transparent and its blush property was excellent
